This video is part of a series about climate change supported by Breakthrough Energy - a coalition founded by Bill Gates, that is working to expand clean-energy investment and support the innovations that will lead the world to net-zero carbon emissions.

Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have released over 1.5 trillion tonnes of carbon dioxide or CO2 into the earth's atmosphere. In the year 2019 we were still pumping out around 37 billion more. That’s 50% more than the year 2000 and almost three times as much as 50 years ago. And it’s not just CO2. We’re also pumping out growing volumes of other greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. Combining all of our greenhouse gases, we’re emitting 51 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents each year.
And emissions keep rising - but they need to get down to 0!

If you want a fix to this you as the individual can do that is free and effectively, here: WRITE TO YOUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE AND CALL THEM IF YOU CAN. I promise you it makes a difference. Government works for the people, it is YOUR money they are spending, you get a say in HOW. I'm seeing a lot of "The world sucks and we can't fix it." And while 2020 is a dumpster fire and there's the current, very apathetic political landscape (the reason for the dumpster fire), you the individual can do something far more significant than biking to work and for far less effort, sending an email. It seems intimidating but it's NO different from calling or writing to an ISP or any other service. Public officials work for YOU. They have to read anything you send regarding policies and decisions. HOWEVER, they do tend to filter chain messages. Write something in your own voice, you can use a pre-written message as a guide and it only takes a few minutes. Really, if you spent 10 minutes watching this video, you can spend 5 writing your local member. Perhaps the other most important thing you can do is VOTE. Don't be swayed by a promise, look at their policies and ESPECIALLY look at who supports them, funds them, AND WHAT THEY'VE DONE RECENTLY. I can tell you as an Australian that our current gov is in the pocket of major coal mining corporations who hate the very notion of reducing carbon emissions. And since these companies fund our current government, the party isn't going to try on a nationwide scale to reduce the emissions unless they're voted out. It's clear that these people are really just in it for the money, and yes that's most politicians I know, but they can be in it for the money and fix the thing that WILL kill us eventually. Write to your local members or any public official who can affect the change we need to see, and VOTE. Vote with your future in mind. Fossil fuels are really only profitable to those who mine them and YOU AREN'T SEEING ANY OF THAT MONEY. Like the video said, if affluent countries that do a lot of trade change their policies on emissions, the rest of the world will follow. It's strongarming them for the BEST reason. And YOU control the pressure. Even with a pending financial crisis, we need to make a change. Climate Change will not wait for us to be ready for it. The only right time to act is now. (and historically it's not like those parties that deny climate change have actually been very good for the economy anyway, they make the rich richer. THAT'S WHY THEY DENY IT.)

Europe uses tons of C02 more than developing nations do you think it's fair to tell developing nations not to develop or not to eat meat while they do, Of course no nation will put up with that. So if your goal is lower C02 then make factories dedicated to sucking it out of the air instead of forcing nations to live under your boot.

Well it is true that some countries are more responsible while some countries are less responsible for climate change. But that doesn't mean that the countries should blame the more carbon emmiting counties for climate and leave the responsibility to fix it with them because no matter what all of us will have to bear the consequences equally.

Carbon emissions is actually better for the atmosphere because carbon strengthens the ozone layer, in fact in the dinosaur era, the earth was filled with carbon, we humans are just bringing it back. Really the only problem with carbon emissions is that Ice in Antarctica is melting which will eventually cause flooding therefore having the earth covered in water as much as it was in the dinosaur era. The most dangerous stuff to the ozone layer is actual chlorine, bromine, and the chemicals in hair spray. Google and other websites: According to a study published in the March 2002 Journal of Geographical Research by a joint research team from the University of Maryland and NASA, overall, the increased amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is speeding up the recovery of the ozone layer - including the hole at the South Pole. What destroys the ozone layer? Ozone Depletion. When chlorine and bromine atoms come into contact with ozone in the stratosphere, they destroy ozone molecules. One chlorine atom can destroy over 100,000 ozone molecules before it is removed from the stratosphere. Ozone can be destroyed more quickly than it is naturally created. At the time, CFCs were used in hairspray, aerosol cans, and refrigerators. A single CFC molecule can last for between 20 and 100 years in the atmosphere, and can destroy100,000 ozone molecules.

While it's true we collectively need to work toward good solutions, the assumption that "if the rich countries of the West seriously tackle global climate change, everyone would" is problematic. What's often neglected is that the other countries (especially China) are our economic RIVALS. China is also very rich and has large trade surpluses with many of those rich Western nations. If Europe and the US take dramatic steps toward addressing climate change, those steps will cost them Tens or hundreds of TRILLIONS of dollars. Most of those steps will also limit their economies and make them LESS competitive with the Chinese and others. So, it is pretty reasonable to demand that China really step up and do something, not just promise to think about maybe doing something in a few decades (after they've gotten even richer and more dominant in trade).

1:18 For that argument, it's easy 1 solution is to just trade purposes, have the Unpolluting (Lifestyle side called by China) start focusing on survival and use the unpolluting energy and China focus on less pollution and won't have to focus on survival. Plus both can help each other by sharing their experience Thats my solution ik its more complicated but still a solution maybe

While I fully agree that we emit far too much emissions, and that we contribute to it. I also fully believe that the planet itself goes through massive periods of heating and cooling regardless of what we do. We have loads of evidence that says that this IS the case. I perhaps we are simply in a period of heating. Now, while I believe this is the case, I also believe that we need to find better means of powering our lives, as since the Earth is likely in its own period of warming our continuous contributions exacerbate the warming to dangerous degrees. That is speculation but it can hardly be a bad thing to reduce our own footprint as it would undoubtedly help.

Nearly the entirety of the Middle East in addition to a fair number of North African countries are singing China's praises right now. China invested billions of dollars into developing them, and completely forgave a great many of their debts to China. Western nations, for some reason, are trying really hard not to let the broadcasting groups discuss this. I suspect the anti-China narrative of the US is a factor in the strange silence.

For the amount of carbon contributed by a country - is that measured by consumption or production? I'm wondering if developed economies shift the carbon intensive production to other countries even though if they did it themselves, they'd have stricter environmental controls.
